Facts on Women of Color in Elective Office
Of the 98 women serving in the 113th US Congress, 30, or 30.6%, are women of color; in addition, an African American woman and a Caribbean American woman serve as Delegates to the House from Washington, DC and the Virgin Islands, respectively.
Of the 75 women serving in statewide elective executive offices, 11, or 14.7%, are women of color.
Of the 1,784 (includes fact sheet addendum as of 4/25/13) women state legislators serving nationwide, 367 or 20.6% are women of color. They include 91 senators and 276 representatives; 345 are Democrats, 21 are Republicans and one is non-partisan. Women of color constitute 5.0% of the total 7,383 state legislators.
