Campaign Trainings for Women

Pipeline to Politics
Sponsored by the Sue Shear Institute for Women in Public Life
The Sue Shear Institute offers a variety of training programs designed to help women navigate the pipeline to politics. "Pipeline to Public Office" is a non-partisan two-day training program for potential candidates and campaign workers designed to help individuals enter the pipeline to political office and hone valuable political career and management skills. The "Pipeline to Local Office" campaign workshop is offered each spring for municipal candidates. This workshop is focused on candidates, but is open to individuals interested in learning more about campaigns and to campaign workers.

The Show Me State Series
The Show Me State Series is an expansion program of the Richard C. Lugar Excellence in Public Service Series, founded in 1989 to encourage, mentor and prepare selected Republican women leaders to seek new levels of involvement in government and politics. The program seeks to fast-track and mainstream outstanding Missouri women into positions of influence in the public arena. Up to 20 women are selected annually through an application and interview process to participate in the training, which is lead by local, state and national Republican leaders. The program is comprised of a series of events held once a month at various locations across Missouri, January through May. The monthly events provide opportunities for the participants to learn from experts in the fields of communication, ethics, public policy, fund-raising and more.

Leadership Training Programs for Women

21st Century Leadership Academy
Sponsored by the Sue Shear Institute for Women in Public Life
The 21st Century Leadership Academy is a week-long residential leadership development program for Missouri college students designed to stimulate interest in public policy formation and teach the skills necessary to succeed in this arena. Students from participating Missouri universities are invited to apply to the program, which is typically held the week before Memorial Day at the Pierre Laclede Honors College on the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus. The program includes panel discussions, small group projects, and skill-building opportunitites, in addition to a day trip to the State Capitol in Jefferson City. Workshop sessions are taught by women who are shaping public policy as elected officials, government leaders and policy advocates. The 21st Century Leadership Academy is part of the NEW Leadership™ Development Network of the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP) at Rutgers University (NJ).

Greater Missouri Leadership Challenge
Greater Missouri Leadership Challenge is an annual traveling symposium designed to bring together women leaders from global corporations, small business, academia, government agencies and non-profit organizations. Through the course of the year, the group is exposed to critical issues confronting their communities, state and nation. Each year, a limited number of outstanding women leaders are accepted into program membership. The participants meet for four three-day session combining continuing education in leadership development, information and major discussion of state policy issues, and exposure to the philosophies and thoughts of the state’s business, cultural, educational and political leaders.

Women in Leadership Program
Sponsored by the Coro Leadership Center - St. Louis
Coro's Women In Leadership (WIL) program is a five-month part-time training program that provides an opportunity for women to refine their personal and professional leadership competencies as well as learn about the community. The program includes five Saturday seminar days and four Thursday field days. Participants with at least three years of management or entrepreneurial leadership experience in business, public affairs, or volunteer work can apply or be nominated to participate in the program.

Leadership Missouri

Leadership Missouri was founded in 1990 to identify current and emerging leaders throughout Missouri, enhance their leadership skills, and deepen their knowledge of the challenges and opportunities facing the state. In a series of seven monthly, two-day sessions, held in various locations in the state, participants meet Missouri's current leaders and learn about the most important issues facing the state of Missouri through field trips, panel discussions, presentations and experiences.

Leadership St. Louis

Founded in 1976, Leadership St. Louis (LSL) is a nine-month leadership development program dedicated to community improvement. Emerging and established leaders are selected among applicants that are first nominated for admission. Participants meet for two-day seminars each month that cover topics like economic development, education, racism, power and politics, poverty and social services, the criminal justice system, arts and culture, and the environment. Graduates of the program go on to take leadership roles in public and private sectors, including politics and government.

New Leaders Council St. Louis
New Leaders Council (NLC) was formed in 2005 to train and support the next generation of progressive political entrepreneurs—young professionals in their twenties and thirties who are leading industries, setting trends, and building institutions that support robust civic and political life in a global America. NLC accomplishes this mission primarily through the NLC Institute - a political entrepreneurship training program held 10 days over a five-month period that builds local teams of young professionals in 19 cities across the nation. NLC Fellows learn entrepreneurship, leadership, and political management skills from over volunteer faculty from relevant industries. Fellows are also paired with career mentors, join a national alumni network, and agree to fundraise to support the next class of Fellows.

The Centurions Leadership Program

The Centurions Leadership Program of The Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce is a two-year program providing education and training to about 75 area members who represent corporations, government agencies, not-for profit organizations, and area universities. Through seminars, activities, and retreats, Centurion members learn about issues of the Kansas City Metro area and become engaged in community projects and civic leadership.

Harriett's List
In honor of Harriett Woods, former governor of Missouri, the List was launched in 2009 to elect more progressive Democratic women to statewide office and the state legislature. Harriett’s List recruits, trains, mentors and supports targeted incumbents and candidates who are committed to equality for women, social and economic justice, and women’s and children’s health. Harriett’s List also engages and activates women voters on behalf of endorsed candidates and speaks out on issues important to women including domestic and sexual violence, pay equity, equality and social and economic justice.

Missouri Federation of Women's Democratic Clubs
The National Federation of Democratic Women (NFDW) supports the inclusion of women’s voices in the Democratic Party. With 32 chapters nationwide, the NFDW promotes Democratic Party goals and candidates and works to unite women party members behind them. NFDW chapters recognize potential women candidates and encourage their candidacies for office.   Members attend meetings, organize educational and political events, volunteer for campaigns, and support candidates for office.

Missouri NOW

Founded in 1966, the National Organization for Women (NOW) is the largest organization of feminist activists in the United States whose goal is to take action to bring about equality for all women. NOW is a multi-issue, multi-strategy organization that takes a holistic approach to women's rights. The organization's official priorities are winning economic equality and securing it with an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that will guarantee equal rights for women; championing abortion rights, reproductive freedom and other women's health issues; opposing racism and fighting bigotry against lesbians and gays; and ending violence against women. NOW has over 550 chapters in all 50 states that participate in education and advocacy activities. Information on state and local chapters of NOW is available on the national NOW website and through state chapters.

Sue Shear Institute for Women in Public Life
The Sue Shear Institute for Women in Public Life was founded in the fall of 1996 to assist women in developing the interest and skills necessary to succeed as full participants within government, serving in elected and appointed office as well as employed policy makers. The Institute:
  • educates students on the need for women's leadership in public service through the 21st Century Leadership Academy
  • maintains a unique Talent Bank of women interested in serving on public boards and commissions and educates elected officials on the willingness of women to serve
  • educates women on how to seek public office through the Pipeline to Politics campaign series
  • educates and coaches women seeking judicial appointments and employment in government policy-making positions.

Political Appointments Projects

The Inside Scoop on Appointments to Boards and Commissions
Sponsored by the Sue Shear Institute for Women in Public Life
"Inside Scoop" is a program designed to give those interested in serving on public boards and commissions an opportunity to hear from the government officials responsible for identifying appropriate appointment candidates. The program targets women interested in appointed office, but is open to all members of the public wanting more information. Presenters for previous seminars have included representatives from the Governor's Office and the Mayor's offices in Kansas City and St. Louis, experts detailing the function and impact of boards and commissions, and women who have served in appointed positions in Missouri. "Inside Scoop" seminars are typically held in off-election years and have been held at both the St. Louis and Kansas City Sue Shear Institute locations.
