Ready to Run™ (Alabama)
Sponsored by AAUW of Alabama
Ready to Run™ Alabama provides non-partisan political training to encourage women to run for government leadership positions. The day-long program targets women considering or recently deciding to run for political office, providing training and mentoring by campaign professionals, political women, and officeholders. Ready to Run™ Alabama is part of the Ready to Run™ National Training Network of the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP) at Rutgers University (NJ).

Women of Will (WOW) is a statewide, nonpartisan organization working to advance a diverse, critical mass of women into leadership positions at work, in the community and in politics. WOW envisions recruiting more women for leadership positions at all levels of government; from appointments to elected positions. WOW brings together women who presently are in the political arena with women who potentially have futures in public service to host quarterly, interactive “Women Will Win” Workshops designed to provide participants with the nuts and bolts of running for political office by focusing on the areas of Communications, Fundraising, Campaigning and the unique barriers that women face.

Leadership Trainings for Women      

NEW Leadership™ Residential Training Program
Sponsored by the Women’s Leadership Institute at Auburn University
The National Education for Women (NEW) Leadership™ five-day intensive leadership training is an intensive five day leadership training program held on the campus of Auburn University. The program is designed to prepare the next generation of women leaders to participate effectively in the decision-making spheres and to contribute to the achievement of a truly representative democracy. Some of the highlights include a visit the Alabama capitol and Southern Poverty Center, sessions and exercises in teambuilding, negotiating, networking, and organization and leadership enhancement. Participants are responsible of designing and presenting action projects to Alabama state legislators as a demonstration of skills learned, exercise of empowerment, and an example of influence. This program is part of the NEW Leadership™ Development Network of the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP) at Rutgers University (NJ).

Leadership Trainings (women and men)

Leadership Alabama
Founded in 1990, Leadership Alabama is a statewide nonprofit organization that each year brings together a class of 50-60 participants for four two-and-one-half-day retreats over a nine month period. The program develops participants' leadership skills through a series of issues-oriented forums on politics and government, education, business and economics, and quality of life, among other topics. Class members visit communities across the state, and as they seek a mutual understanding of the problems and priorities facing the state, they also seek to invent vital solutions to the challenges that define the future of the state.

Leadership Birmingham
Leadership Birmingham is a nine-month leadership development program that educates participants on issues important to the region while preparing them to take active leadership roles. Forty to 46 leaders are selected each year to participate in eight monthly meetings (about 13 hours each) with off-site sessions and two retreats. Session topics include education, government, justice, community development, health, human services, quality of life, and economic development.

Alabama National Organization for Women (NOW)
Founded in 1966, the National Organization for Women (NOW) is multi-issue, multi-strategy organization that takes a holistic approach to women's rights. The organization's official priorities are winning economic equality and securing it with an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that will guarantee equal rights for women; championing abortion rights, reproductive freedom and other women's health issues; opposing racism and fighting bigotry against lesbians and gays; and ending violence against women. NOW has over 550 chapters in all 50 states that participate in education and advocacy activities. Information on state and local chapters of NOW are available on the national NOW website and through state chapters.

Women’s Leadership Institute at Auburn University
The Women’s Leadership Institute (WLI) was established to help women associated with Auburn University take a proactive step in closing the gender gap created by the underrepresentation of women in politics, corporate boardrooms, and the administrations of business and educational institutions. The WLI creates a network, think tank, and cutting edge learning environment to empower women for a lifetime of leadership. The mission is accomplished through several programs including the Extraordinary Women Lecture series, the Women's Leadership Summit, the NEW Leadership Residential Training Program, LED Talks, Women and Leadership courses, the AU Women Lead Learning Community, and partnerships with many other institutions throughout the state of Alabama.
