Garden State 'Trafficking:' Exploring Human Trafficking in New Jersey and Beyond

March 27, 2009 - A Human Trafficking Conference at Monmouth University organized by NEW Leadership New Jersey alum Alexandra Bartlom

Human Trafficking Conference at Monmouth UniversityI was inspired by Alex Espinosa's Human Trafficking Workshop "Stand Up! Against Modern day Slavery in New Jersey."  A workshop for NEW Leadership alumnae held at Rutgers University. After seeing all of the support for anti-trafficking at Rutgers, and how important of an issue human trafficking is to our community, I decided I needed to try to re-create that enthusiasm on anti-trafficking at Monmouth University.
(Learn more about the 2008 "Stand Up! against modern day slavery" event here.)

As Co-Chair of the Events Committee of the Human Relations Advisory Council, I worked with Heather Kelly, Assistant Director of Student Activities for Multicultural and Diversity programming, and Claude Taylor, Co-Chair of the Events Committee and Lecturer, to design the conference. Dr. Joseph Patten, Director of the Public Policy Graduate program; Dr. Rekha Datta, Chair of the Department of Political Science; and Amari Verástegui, NJ State Director of the Not for Sale Campaign, helped me find our talented, well-rounded group of speakers.

Our audience consisted of at least 258 people.  Throughout the day, they had the opportunity to learn about human trafficking at the international and local levels, and most notably at the personal level.  Speakers included, Dr. Federigo Magherini, Information Officer at the United Nations Department of Public Information; Kathleen Friess (NJ), Program Coordinator of the New Jersey Human Trafficking Task Force; Amari Verástegui, New Jersey State Director of the Not for Sale Campaign. Also, Beatrice Fernando, trafficked survivor, Founding President of the Nivasa Foundation, and Author of In Contempt of Fate, discussed her personal experiences as a formerly trafficked person.

Overall, I would describe the Garden State 'Trafficking' Conference as a major success.  During the conference, ninety people signed up to join the Monmouth University Not for Sale Chapter, which I am working to establish for the upcoming school year, and I see more organization and collaboration efforts ahead for this important cause.
