About NEW Leadership

NEW Leadership students

The NEW Leadership™ summer institute is an intensive residential program which educates college women about politics and policy making and inspires them to get involved in the political process. During the six day program students meet with women in a variety of roles in the public sphere, learn about women’s political participation, explore ideas about leadership and politics, and participate in hands-on skills building exercises.

This conference has completely opened my eyes to options... This week inspired, encouraged and confirmed that there’s more that I can do.

The residential nature of the program creates an intensive learning experience that cannot be replicated with a series of one-day programs. Students, staff and resident faculty (women political leaders who stay for the entire program) live together in dormitory rooms during the NEW Leadership™ program. The residential component encourages a sense of esprit de corps among the participants, establishes mentoring relationships and extends the learning experience beyond the formal program sessions, as conversations continue over meals and throughout the evening.

NEW Leadership™ is based on a six-point curriculum. The curriculum establishes a foundation for the NEW Leadership™ model that can be adapted to accommodate a wide range of political cultures, geographic regions, populations and institutions, while remaining true to the goals and mission of NEW Leadership™ as it was established in 1991.
