50 States in 2020 - Bring NEW Leadership™ to Your State

The NEW Leadership™ Development Network currently includes 18 colleges and universities across the country. To date, more than 3500 students from over 21 states have participated in regional NEW Leadership™ programs for college women, as well as the flagship program in New Jersey. CAWP’s goal is to have NEW Leadership™ programs available to college women in all 50 states by 2020.

The program provides valuable skills training in public speaking, negotiation and conflict resolution, diversity and networking...NEW Leadership™ Puget Sound is an important example of the University’s efforts to encourage our students to become leaders in an increasingly diverse society.

Participation in the Development Network provides a unique opportunity for building and expanding the institutional capacities of partner schools. For institutions that already have a strong focus on women’s leadership, NEW Leadership™ can help to strengthen this mission. For others, becoming an NLDN partner offers the prospect of expanding the institutions’ programming and outreach. Without exception, the NEW Leadership™ programs in each successful partner school have garnered a strong commitment from women leaders in the area and served to strengthened connections between the school and political women in the region.

Bring NEW Leadership™ to Your State
We know the real success of this program goes far beyond the week the students spend on campus. Its impact will be fully realized as the graduates rise to leadership roles in the public sector...It is imperative that we support initiatives to encourage civic engagement among our students, and provide them will the skills necessary to lead us in the future.

Each year CAWP selects up to three institutions to join the Development Network. Selected partner schools agree to send two representatives to observe and participate in the NEW Leadership™ New Jersey summer institute, where they where they meet with program staff and receive training on developing a NEW Leadership™ program in their state.



Partner representatives return to their home campuses to plan state or regional NEW Leadership™ programs involving colleges and universities in their vicinity. CAWP staff provide ongoing consultation and assistance to partner representatives as they develop and implement their own NEW Leadership™ summer institutes.

Eligibility
Any unit within a non-profit institution of higher education is eligible to become a partner, including, but not limited to, academic departments, student life offices, research organizations, and public service/leadership centers. In selecting partners, preference will be given to institutions in regions not currently represented in the Development Network. Institutions with a history of serving women of color are particularly encouraged to apply.
 
Partner Criteria
CAWP is seeking NLDN Partners who demonstrate:
  • Experience developing programs that meet the distinctive needs of women students.
  • A commitment to multi-partisan women’s political education programming.
  • A commitment to recruiting participants and speakers who are diverse in race, ethnicity, political ideology, and sexual orientation.
  • The potential for working with other educational institutions in the state or region.
  • Access to women leaders, including elected officials, political activists, community leaders and women and politics scholars.
  • Support from the home institution for establishing and continuing the NEW Leadership™ program, and a commitment to assign a key staff member to oversee the project.
  • A proven track record for raising funds to support similar projects, and the support of the home institution to undertake such fundraising.
